SUPERSTITION. s. f. Opinion vaine, mal fondée en fait de religion. Fausse confiance en de certaines paroles, en de certaines ceremonies, ausquelles s'attachent les personnes foibles & simples. Le peuple est sujet à beaucoup de superstitions. la superstition est ennemie de la religion. rien n'est plus opposé à la veritable devotion que la superstition. les esprits foibles introduisent la superstition, remplissent tout de superstitions. les augures, les oracles estoient des superstitions payennes.
On appelle aussi, Superstition, Le vain presage qu'on tire de certains accidents purement fortuits. Il y a de la superstition à croire que la rencontre d'une belette, que le sel d'une saliere respandu sur la table presage un malheur. croire que quand on se trouve treize à table, il en doive mourir un dans l'année, c'est une superstition.
On appelle encore, Superstition, Tout excez d'exactitude, de soin, en quelque matiere que ce soit. Il va jusqu'à la superstition sur sa santé.
